Cranky Canine

Description

This is a specialized program for dogs who make embarrassing displays at the end of their leash. In these classes, we use reward-based training and humane tools and techniques.

These classes are held indoors in a secure location with visual barriers and timed entrances and exits, so that we can ensure safety and working below threshold at all times.

These classes are not a "cure" for your dog's behaviour but you will learn how to handle and train your dog to work toward your goals while taking advantage of an opportunity to practice with other dogs in a safe and controlled environment.

This is an eight-session course and the first class is mandatory and humans only! All other classes are kept to 45-60 minutes due to the nature of the activities. Classes are small in order to ensure safety and personal attention.

When working on reactivity in private lessons, you may end up spending up to (or over) a thousand dollars as it takes time to teach your dog alternate behaviours, counter condition them, then teach them how to walk nicely on leash, and finally help them learn how to make a safe or socially acceptable decision when in a situation that causes them tension.

As a participant in a reactive dog class like Cranky Canine, you work through an intense program with two knowledgable instructors, the support of other classmates who understand your struggles, in a safe and secure location with controlled setups and hands-on direction. It will also cost a fraction of what you would likely be spending in private lessons.

The goals for this course will vary from dog to dog, but a realistic goal for many dogs is to be able to pass other dogs on the street safely.

Curriculum

We will:
  • learn about reactivity and aggression,
  • counter condition responses to stimuli,
  • increase our dogs' focus on us,
  • recognize and reward calming signals,
  • learn how to get out of a tight situation in the “real world”,
  • decrease arousal levels,
  • shorten recovery time and
  • desensitize them to the presence and proximity of other dogs

Requirements

  • dogs four (4) months and older
  • dogs must be healthy and up to date on vaccinations
  • humane tools and equipment (ask us!)
Aversive methods, shock/prong/pinch/choke collars are not permitted in our facility. We treat our dogs like family and hope that you will too.

Testimonials

" ...Since taking the course, Teddy has practically stopped reacting to the presence of other dogs, since we are consistently reinforcing good, constructive behaviour from Teddy using all of the great tools given to us over the 8 sessions..." Erica & Andrew, Toronto

" ...I thought the frequency of the class and the content was amazing. It forced dog owners to deal with the issue straight on in a really active way, since 2 x per week is a pretty heavy schedule. I think this sort of schedule is necessary for dogs to learn well and keep using what they knowing and growing...." Anonymous, Toronto

" ...The instructions, helpfulness and friendliness of the trainers [was outstanding]. They were always calm and the dogs loved them. Instructions were clear and if something didn't work one way they easily tweaked a method and came up with creative ways of solving problems....." Anonymous, Toronto
